Intro

The muscles of the head and carry quite the workload. These muscles pull the skull and jaw toward the shoulders, spine, and shoulder blades (Scapula), and contract to adjust the posture of the head. They’re also responsible for the motor movements, giving the muscular system of the head and neck coordination to move in every direction.

Working individually, these muscles rotate the head and neck. Working in pairs, these muscles flex and bend the head and neck on the sides of the body.

Despite having some of greatest endurance of any of the muscles in the body, the head and neck are not immune to pain.

Some of the primary causes of head and neck pain include:
  • Abnormalities in the bone or joints
  • Trauma
  • Poor Posture
  • Segenerative Diseases
  • Muscle strain

Nerve entrapments are a medical condition caused by direct pressure on a nerve. They are another source of pain in the head and neck, the result of the narrow spinal cord passage, combined with the high volume of muscle movements connected to the head and neck.
